Why do we use Western Red Cedar?
Western Red Cedar is one of the worlds premier quality woods noted
for its appearance, light weight, and dimensional stability. Properly
installed and finished, it will give decades of trouble free service
and will give your home a character and distinction that other products
cannot match.
Western Red Cedar offers the advantages of natural beauty, exceptional
dimensional stability, and long-term durability. Its excellent stability
comes from its straight-grained characteristics that help it to
naturally resist warping. It is also highly resistant to decay.
The wood contains compounds called thujaplicins, which provide a
natural decay resistance and provide that wonderful cedar aroma.
Thujic acid also found naturally in the wood makes it more resistant
to insect attack. There are no harmful chemicals like the ones you
find in pressure-treated wood products. As you can see, Western
Red Cedar has a long history of withstanding the rigors of time
and weather.
Western Red Cedar contains naturally occurring water-soluble extractives
than can leach out over time, which is one of the reasons why it
changes to a grey color after a while. For this reason, it is suggested
to use a natural oil-based clear stain to improve longevity of the
exposed product. Western Red Cedar is one of the few woods with
its own preservative oils. Its freedom from pitch and resin gives
it an excellent base for accepting a wide variety of finishes, from
stains to paints. The Mail-House recommends you keep your mailbox
stained or painted for added beauty and longevity. Western Red Cedar,
though naturally strong and beautiful, will last for an exceptionally
long time with the aid of a stain or paint.
In a world of too much plastic, metal and masonry, our Western
Red Cedar mailboxes provide a warm and attractive addition to your
home. We know you'll be pleased with our product. |
